Our Trip To The Zoo

Jun 14, 2009 General

Some days when I write a lot, I  can’t feel my hands. Especially my finger tips, that discomfort is just plain annoying. Yesterday though, it was nice to have a break from work and pain in different places. Specifically, my legs. We went to the DC Zoo yesterday, which is The National Zoo.

Hiking up those hills is challenging, but the heat was worse than miles of walking. I plan to write about our trip to the zoo, which was fun but exhausting. I am glad that the Washington,DC zoo is free. I would have been upset about having to pay for a difficult experience, specifically the crowds of rude people. Never have I seen grown adults, pushing people or even trampling over kids, just to see a damn animal. The zoo should really do something for crowd control. There was several times when I felt that my son was unsafe, and we even walked away from several exhibits instead of allowing people to shove us around.

Kody had fun though, and that is all that matters. He did so well all day, even without a nap. At the monkey exhibit, he got to see a monkey up-close, which just thrilled him. I should write a thank you note to the zoo, Kody hasn’t stopped talking about the “monk” that he got to see and even doing his monkey noises. We did not get to see pandas, which disappointed me. A lot of the exhibits were either being renovated, or the animals were nowhere to be seen. It may have been the heat, or something else, but again I’m glad the zoo is free. It would not have been worth an entrance ticket.

A Weekend Of Sun and Fun

May 2009

This weekend was filled with sunshine, music and family fun. On Friday, we spent some quality time with friends and their newborn. Kody was excited to see his new friend, and was very gentle with him too. I was surprised by how well behaved he was around the baby, and he was certainly gentler than he is with our dogs. Sometimes I feel bad for our dogs, as their ears get pulled and they get chased around the house until either Kody passes out or they give up on trying to run away.

Our Saturday was all about a local charity event, an outdoor music and food festival for a good cause. Kody came along too, as the event was family oriented and no alcohol was served. He seemed to really enjoy live music, dancing and putting on his own show for everyone to enjoy. I will submit a review of the event sometime this week, it was a lot of fun for us. I did feel for the family whose foundation organized this event. They lost their young son, when he was just a toddler. I can’t imagine losing my son, or the way grief would cripple me. They managed to turn their loss into something positive, and raise money for great local causes and children in need. Still, I held my son that day and enjoyed watching him be a kid, while another family had to remember the pain of losing their child. Once the event was over, the three of us went out for a quick walk and then we passed out of the night.

On Sunday, we got an early start, and my husband helped me put a flower and herb garden in. I call it my urban garden, because we have no back yard and very little space to work with. It still turned out nice, with flowers running along the side of our house and an herb garden outside of the back door. I had some potting soil and large pots and planted the leftover flowers for the front porch. As much as my husband annoys me, and anyone married understands how spouses can be annoying, we had a great time gardening together. He actually listened to me, and followed my directions for a change. I see more gardening experiments and bonding time in our future.
